The Haileybury Waterlions Swimming Club has a relationship intrinsically connected with Fastlane Aquatics to provide the squad coaching services for the club.

The coaching staff used by Fastlane Aquatics for the Waterlions are:





Wayne Lawes

Wayne

Wayne Lawes has been the Haileybury Waterlions' Head Coach since he formed the club back around 1980 (see the club history).

He is the coach for the following squads:

  • all National Squad sessions
  • 2 of the National Development Squad sessions per week
  • 1 of the State Development Squad sessions per week

His qualifications and experience include:

  • Gold Coaching qualification
  • Bronze Strength and Conditioning qualification
  • Coach of many Olympic and international swimmers
  • VIS coach
  • Head coach of Australian Youth (Female) distance program
  • Head coach of Victorian 2006 Target Squad
  • Coach of the 2005 Australian Junior Pan-Pacs team for Hawaii
  • Coach of the 2004 Australian Girls Team at the Oceania Games in Fiji
  • Registered tutor coach
  • Member of the World Swim Coaches Association
  • Member of coaches associations in the USA and Canada
  • Studied in America at UCLA under U.S. Olympic Coach Ron Ballatore in 1983, 1985, 1991 and 1993
  • Named Victorian Coach of the Year in 1993/94 and 1994/95
  • Holds a Pool Management Certificate

Wayne is the Managing Director of Fastlane Aquatics which also operates Learn To Swim lessons at the Haileybury pools.

As a competitor, he competed at national level in Freestyle and Breaststroke and is a former Australian triathlon champion and Victorian triathlon team captain.


Brad

Brad Smith

Brad is the coach for the following squads:

  • 5 of the National Development Squad sessions per week
  • all State Squad sessions
  • 1 of the State Development Squad sessions per week

Before joining the Haileybury Waterlions in 2003, he was Head Coach of Squidline based at the Harold Holt Memorial Pool in Glen Iris.

Currently, Brad is on the coaching panel for the Swimming Victoria 2010 Development Squad. He has a Bronze coaching qualification and is a former competitive swimmer and triathlete.


Amanda Norton

Amanda Norton

Amanda is the coach for the following squads:

  • 1 of the State Development Squad sessions per week
  • all Junior Squad sessions
  • all Club Squad sessions

Amanda swam with the Waterlions from 1988 to 1995, during which time she had some outstanding achievements:

  • Multiple Victorian State Age medallist - 31 gold, 15 silver, 6 bronze (approx)
  • Multiple Victorian State Open medallist - 17 gold, 13 silver, 9 bronze (approx)
  • Multiple Medallist at Australian Age & Open Nationals Individual & Relays: 12 gold, 9 silver, 13 bronze
  • Member of Waterlions Medley Relay team to hold Australian, Australian A/C, Australian Club & Australian Club A/C short course record (other members Kim Gasch, Penny O'Connell & Linley Frame)
  • Multiple Victorian records, still holding 2 state records.

She has a Masters degree in Science (Exercise Physiology) and Bachelor of Science (Sports Coaching & Administration) and coached swimming at college level in USA at Michigan University and Louisiana State University.

Currently, Amanda is on the coaching panel for the Swimming Victoria Age Qualifiers Development Squad.


Matt Allen

Matt

Matt assists with the Junior squad and works in conjunction with Amanda.

He was a former swimmer with the Waterlions for many years up to 2005 through to National Squad. He was a Victorian finalist in the 100 & 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and 400 freestyle.

Matt holds a Green coaching qualification and is currently completing a Bachelor degree in Exercise Science at the ACU.
