Waterlions team

We have long been one of the top swimming clubs in Victoria and continue to produce champion swimmers.

The Beginning:

The Waterlions Swim Team took shape around 1978, when Wayne Lawes brought together a group of junior and senior swimmers at the Freeway Sports Centre in Dandenong. The squads trained at Freeway Sports for the following few years as the team grew in numbers and stature.

In 1989, Wayne took the Waterlions to the King Club in Sandringham, where our swimmers trained alongside the King Club Squads and Swimming Victoria District Three members.

After about 3 years at the King Club, the Waterlions moved to the Dandenong Oasis Pool, this time training at the same facility as the Oasis Swim Squads.

The Haileybury Era:

Training at the Haileybury pool

Late in 1995, the Waterlions moved to our current home at the Haileybury College Aquatic Facility on Springvale Road, Keysborough.

Our success grew to a pinnacle in 1996/97 & 1997/98 when we were named the Premier Club of Victoria.

Haileybury Waterlions currently have over 100 registered swimmers, with the majority in National, State and Junior squads. We are constantly increasing our numbers, with new swimmers joining and competing each year.

We are proud of our relationship with Haileybury College and our ability to use the facilities at the College for training and competition purposes. Our club has been congratulated on numerous occasions for the professional manner in which our own swim meets are conducted.

Five-year Vision Statement:

Our aim is to build the Waterlions to again become the Premier Swimming Club of the Victoria and one of the top clubs in Australia, whilst maintaining a positive and supportive environment allowing all our swimmers to reach their full individual potential.

This will be achieved by building team spirit and pride in our club, and through the hard work and commitment of our swimmers, coaches and parents.

Specifically, our goals for the next five years to 2013 are:

  • Provide a support for all swimmers at all levels of competition from novice to international.
  • Promote a "family" atmosphere where new members feel welcome.
  • Focus on maintaining membership levels and building it further to 150 swimmers.
  • Promote the club in the local area and community groups.
  • Broaden the membership base through the Learn-to-Swim program and other feeder groups.
  • Maintain the passion to excel.
  • Provide each athlete with the environment and opportunity for them to reach their full potential.
  • Become the premier club in Victoria.
  • Promote positive self-esteem for all swimmers.
  • Foster a fun and family-oriented environment.
  • Recognise and promote goal achievement.
  • Achieve higher rankings in State and National competitions.
  • Continue to produce world-class athletes.
  • Maintain a team tradition.
  • Build the younger swimmers to develop a future.
  • Promote the team environment for parents and carers, as well as the athletes.
  • Increase professional support services and staff, giving our athletes exposure to the best in sports science.
